2009: Doorbraak van het digitale lezen Webwereld

In de VS kende de Kindle al in 2008 al zijn doorbraak. Om preciezer te zijn op vrijdag 24 oktober , toen Oprah haar televisiepubliek vertelde over haar nieuwe favoriete speeltje. Elke huisvrouw in de Verenigde Staten wist opeens wat een e-reader was.

Als we in Nederland al een Oprah-moment hebben gehad dan was dat op 26 augustus 2009, toen Bol.com bekendmaakte e-books en e-readers te gaan verkopen. Ongetwijfeld geïnspireerd door Oprah trok Bol.com ook een blik (semi-)bekende Nederlanders als Susan Smit, Joost Zwagerman en Vincent Everts open om het digitale lezen te promoten.

BeBook en iLiad

In Nederland waren al langer e-readers te koop zoals de Bebook en de iLiad, beide verkocht door een Nederlands bedrijf. Maar het is tekenend dat boekhandel Selexyz in ruim twee jaar slechts 1.200 iLiads wist te verkopen, terwijl Bol.com in de eerste 10 dagen alleen al ruim 1.500 apparaten verkocht. 

Bol.com verwacht dit jaar in totaal 10.000 e-readers te verkopen. Dat overtreft de aanvankelijke verwachtingen ruimschoots, laat het bedrijf weten. De bestverkochte modellen zijn de Sony Touch Edition en de Sony Pocket Edition, hoewel Bol.com ook de COOL-ER, Cybook, BeBook en iRiver verkoopt.
