Ebook reader?
Amazon Kindle 2

What's a good ebook reader trademark? I don't mean to spend $400 in one..

What do mean by 'ebook reader'? I use Microsoft Reader for .lit files, Mobipocket, which reads most other ebook formats, and Adobe Reader for Pocket PC for pdfs.

If you mean, what's a good PDA to read ebooks on... I'm particularly fond of my Acer. The iPaqs are fab, but you don't need something that expensive if you're only using it for ebooks. Acers are nice reliable little pieces of kit, and you can usually pick up an N30 or N35 for under £150 on eBay.

MS Reader comes with Windows Mobile
Mobipocket is freeware, which you can download here: http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/ProductDetailsReader.asp
Adobe Reader for Pocket PC is also freeware, found here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readerforppc.html

With those three you should be able to read pretty much anything.

NY1 report on the Sony e-book Reader

What is the best ebook reader around?
Amazon Kindle 2

I want to get a dedicated eBook reader. Must be able to do normal pdf files or at least come with software to convert to whatever format it displays.
Sorry I meant a piece of hardware.

Try yBook 1.4.58, downloadable from Download.com (http://www.download.com/yBook/3000-2125_4-10609994.html?tag=lst-0-4) It shows you ebook as a paper novel.

Does anybody know what is the best free Ebook reader on the web for Java mobile phones?
Amazon Kindle 2

I'm looking for book readers on the web but I only get those with such poor quality. Does anybody know what is the best free ebook reader available that supports Java enabled phones?

I'd suggest visiting the forums at http://www.mobileread.com and checking the areas on "other devices" and "reading software." (I don't know what kind of phones are Java-enabled, or I'd be more specific.) They've got discussions, a FAQ and a wiki about the different kinds of software, and what works on which devices, and sometimes hacks or other fixes that can make the software work better on your reader.

Can the Sony Ebook reader read books in other formats?
Amazon Kindle 2

I just got an ebook reader for christmas, and though the sony ebook site has a lot of material, it doesn't have everything I', looking for. Can I download eBook from other sites and still read them on the sony reader?

Sony Reader will read any .lrf (that's their format, the same as you get from their site, except the copy-protected ones are .lrx), .epub (with the firmware update), .pdf, .rtf, and .txt files.

PDF is by far the easiest to acquire; .epub is the most common & best-featured ebook format for portable readers. The Sony Reader will read any PDF--but most of them are formatted in a way that makes them hard to read; using the "M" and "L" options loses the formatting, but only some books are easy to read that way. (It's fine for novels; bad for charts & tables & anything with pictures.)

You can get free ebooks from http://www.manybooks.net and http://www.feedbooks.com, along with several other sites; feedbooks even has PDFs size-formatted for reading on the Sony Reader. And Mobileread.com has thousands of free ebooks, plus forums and a wiki that can help you figure out what's available and whether stuff the Reader can't read can be converted.

Will the E-book reader concept be a hit? Moneycontrol.com

All that seems fine and predictable but then what about the new IN thing this CES 2010? Slates? They too claim to have ample battery life, and can easily replace paper. Of course they are much more than just paper; they will be your PC screen in your hand. There is a school of people who believe that eBook readers will die the fate of Digital Photo frames, and will be replaced by super thin tablets. As of now there is not enough evidence to take a side on that argument; I just know one thing for a fact, the e ink technology is much better on the eyes, as it's a reflective technology meaning no light coming straight at you. Watching the illuminated screen of a tablet for 8 hours continuous is not my idea of relaxation.

Secondly the iPod is a success as it's backed by the iTunes store. How much ever we hate DRM, it works, and most regular (read non tech savvy) users will go on and buy an MP3 player from the store, so then why not a book? Of course this problem becomes India Specific

TUAW ebook reader smackdown: Kindle 2 vs. iPhone

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Odds and ends, Reviews, iPhone, TUAW Faceoff, App Store

Before the release of the original Amazon Kindle a little over a year ago, there were a number of electronic book readers that tried to create and capture the market for a replacement to traditional "dead tree" books. There have been readers for just about every handheld unit since the Newton, as well as a series of devices that all required would-be readers to hook their book to a PC or Mac to transfer the content.

Amazon changed all that with the Kindle by creating a device with built-in 3G networking that delivers books to you the minute you buy them. I was one of the people who purchased the first-generation Kindle, and though it delivered on wireless purchase of books, it was a clunky, poorly designed device.

In the meantime, Apple introduced the iPhone 3G and the App Store, and several ebook reader apps have worked their way onto the home screens of millions of iPhone owners. So, is Steve Jobs right? Is there no need for a dedicated electronic book device like Kindle?

I've used both the original Kindle and the new Kindle 2, and I've also read my share of electronic books on the iPhone. Which of the reigning champions of the ebook world is the winner? Read on to find out.
