The History of Publishing 2010 – 2020 pt1 Fiction Matters

At the dawn of 2010, publishing as we know it today was a vastly different entity. There were clear lines between author and reader, and stories themselves were trapped in analog isolation. Like a machine, the industry was arranged into players with a unique roles – author, publisher, distributor, marketer, seller, and reader. Though there was some overlap, but much like the books of 2010 and before, these players frequently existed in isolation.

The concept of the living story had yet to be born.

2010 was a dramatic year for publishing.

The established publishing industry at the beginning of the year 2010 saw six major publishing houses, each with numerous imprints, cumulatively publishing tens of thousands of new books annually. Beyond the large houses, which were owned by a few far-reaching conglomerates, there were smaller, independent presses, each attempting to carve out a unique niche. Drawing further away from the center, there were numerous other publishing options, vanity, POD, and hybrid electronic presses, each vainly vying for the attentions of both authors and readers.
