e book reader

Answers

Is there any way to open a Word or PDF file on a cell phone? I want to use my phone for a e-book reader.?
Lettore-17

I have a Sony Ericcson w300i and I would like to be able to use it as an e-book reader if possibe. I would even be open to buying software if it's available but would prefer free. Thanks!

Typically PDA style cellular phones are capable of this feature, and typically requires the purchase of a 3rd party application. Your phone will likely not support this feature as it is basically a straight cellular phone, and not a PDA style phone like a Treo or BlackBerry.

My BlackBerry's will support this feature with the purchase of a 3rd Party app.

Hope this helps.

NY1 report on the Sony e-book Reader

Where can I get Sony E-book reader in Chennai?
Lettore-04

I see that sony has not listed these gadgets in their India site. Where can I get a E-book reader? And how much does one cost me?

Sony has limited the countries in which it will sell the PRS series ebook readers. Fortunately, there are other companies that make ebook readers.

I've found the MobileRead website very helpful.

Does anyone have advise and or recommendations on buying an e-book reader?
Lettore-11

I would like one that has a built in dictionary and about the size of a hardback book.

You are better off with a low end Pocket PC device like Casio or Acer or Palm based PDA as almost all eBook readers (Franklin,PDAMan etc) have seemed to failed.

What are the pros and cons of a digital book(e-book reader) ? What is your biggest complain about it?
Lettore-19

I heard a lot of users complain that digital readers does not feel like reading a real book. Is that true? If so what would make it feel like a real book?

Two reasons why e-book readers didn't pick up in the market were
1. Lack of availability of content
2. High pricing / Lack of marketting or business model that justify the cost.

How do I 'delete' a book from the new Sony e-Book reader?
Lettore-16

It's pretty simple.

1) First you have to have the Connect software loaded onto your computer. (You should have it already on loaded in order to purchase books or to put books onto your reader.) Make sure that your ebook is plugged into the computer via the cord that came with the reader. If it doesn't fit, then you can easily purchase one from any Staples store. (That's what I had to do.)

2) On your left hand column there should be a list of things that you can go to. (Library, download/uploaded books, the ebook store, your e-reader, ect) Click on the e-reader.

3) You should now see a list of books. Right click on the one that you want to delete. A list of options should pop up. Select delete.

There is also a help menu available at the top if you need it, as well as at the sony website.

Universities avoid Kindle over accessibility barriers Register

That Act prohibits discrimination against people on the basis of their disability and applies to public bodies and all post-secondary educational institutions whether public or private.

Though maintaining that it had not broken the law, the University settled that case and the trial of the machines will be allowed to conclude this spring.

The American Council of the Blind said that it reached the agreement because of "the university's agreement that should ASU deploy e-book readers in future classes over the next two years, it will strive to use devices that are accessible to the blind", according to a Council statement.

The Department of Justice said that three other universities had agreed not to use or promote Kindle devices or other e-book readers that were not fully accessible to blind users.

"Under the agreements reached today, the universities generally will not purchase, recommend or promote use of the Kindle DX, or any other dedicated electronic book reader, unless the devices are fully accessible to students who are blind and have low vision. The universities agree that if they use dedicated electronic book readers, they will ensure that students with vision disabilities are able to access and acquire the same materials and information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services as sighted students with substantially equivalent ease of use."

Classic Battle for eBook Reader Market

While Amazon makes the big splash with Kindle 2 and fends off potential lawsuit regarding its technology, sony-ereaderSony has cut a deal with Google that is a classic.

As reported at cnet, in a partnership with Sony, Google will provide over 500,000 titles whose copyrights have expired which include literary classics like “Sense and Sensibility” and “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”. This move takes the number of titles to that the Sony offering has to 600,000 vs. the 250,000 for the Amazon offering. These include German, French, Spanish, Italian and other language translations as well.

Of course, if you don’t care about the classics then this is a moot point. In this economy though it’s hard to beat the fact that users will now be able to access the free book downloads through Sony’s eBook Store. I know these are all titles that were written prior to 1923 for the most part but a good book is a good book regardless of when it was written. Maybe studying the classics would be helpful to a nation that has spent more time looking over the past 80 plus years of economic activity more than ever before. Maybe looking back is a good way to move forward. I don’t know but for many it beats trekking to the library to get a beat up copy of these books that has been dog eared and written in over the past 20 years.

Google is taking advantage of all the work it has done with its Google book search project. While the books are free to the Sony Reader users there is little doubt that Sony ponied up a fair amount of cash for the opportunity although the details have not been disclosed.

I have not made the e Book switch yet and I am not sure I will. There are a lot of folks out there that really enjoy this option and apparently the big players are raising the stakes. Should be interesting to track.
