I downloaded a few ebooks recently and realized that I don't want to burn out my eyes sitting alone in my basement with a huge mostly white screen in my face. I looked into digital readers to take these into another, more comfortable area, and I found that they cost around $220.
Normally I don't question the price of electronic devices, but I know a bit about hardware and it seems to me that a screen (and a screen that can exist on a rather low frame-rate and be black and white) and some flash memory with some type of reader program shouldn't cost much more than $50.
I have a zen V plus with a full color screen, output for speakers and a solid 2gb of memory and it cost me a good $50. I'd just use that to read my books, but the postage-stamp size screen is a problem.
Perhaps I'm missing something (If I am, please explain what) but these prices seem ridiculous. If anyone knows where I can get one cheaply please tell me.
Side note, I own a psp that I intend to put custom firmware on
Yahoo limited my question size. I'm going to install custom firmware, but is there an easier/cheaper way to make these portable than to mod a psp?
If youre looking for a convenient way to read your eBooks instead of scrolling through countless pages online, then make sure you get the Sony ...
I wanna get a digital book reader, I know about the kindle and thats sold out, and i know about sony's. I was just wondering if there were anymore to choose from, that are available in north america. And if anyone has reviews or problems they want to share with me. also was wondering if I can put whatever sort of text i want onto them.
plenty of answers would be much appreciated.
Sony's.
I want to get a Sony reader digital book. I would like to know if you like it for the people who has this device.
It's okay, I'd go with the Amazon Kindle though. I've had both, and would say I got more out of the Kindle.
I just learned that i am getting the Kindle from my husband for christmas.(so excited) Anyway i was looking at the add for target and came across the digital reader from sony. Does anyone know what the difference is??? If so which one is better then??? thanks( although i am keeping the Kindle -its from my husband.)
In addition to the advantages mentioned by the other posters, the Kindle has on more major one - the selection available. Amazon currently offers about 185,000 titles in Kindle format, and they're adding more all the time. The last time I checked, the Sony only had about 20,000 titles available. With that much selection available, you can pretty much guarantee always having something to read that you will enjoy.
Im thinking of buying Sony's Reader Digital Book PRS-505, but only if I can use the books that I download from the Gutenburg Project. Does anyone know if they're compatible?
Yes! Project Gutenberg books are available in plain text, so you can use the material to create ebooks that may be read on almost any device or you can just read add the text file to the reader. Many of these files have already been converted into Sony's format (LRF) for easy readability.

Ray Kurzweil on the future of digital books Los Angeles Times (blog)
If you think that the E Ink screen on the Kindle look like a wet newspaper, you're not alone.
Inventor and technology futurist Ray Kurzweil thought the same thing. So the man who developed optical character recognition and voice recognition came up with Blio , a digital book software program that promises to put those gray-scale displays to shame.
"E-books should be more than digital copies of a printed page," Kurzweil said during an interview last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where he demonstrated his latest invention. "But the e-readers on the market today are stuck in neutral. So we moved it from a boring 16 shades of gray text to an exciting level, with rich interactivity and full color."
Blio, which will be available as a free download in February, is designed to work with existing devices including Windows-based computers, iPhones and most browsers. The advantage is that Blio can incorporate many of the interactive functions people have come to expect from surfing the Web: embedded slide shows, Flash animations, soundtracks, videos and links to related content.
