I would have expected this to come out at least 5 years ago and at a quarter the price. A Kindle costs as much as an iPhone and beyond displaying B+W text does little else. I am not saying that it should, but I would expect it to be cheaper.
Because they have a built in basically SIM card. Meaning that they have access to book even when out of range of WIFI, like a phone. THey can download books anywhere you can get phone service with no monthly charge. Only a Per-Book Charge.

how do you download stories to electronic books.
There are several formats. And it depends if they are premium or not. Microsoft Reader will download easily the books in its format. I use Yread2full for other formats. I use Yread play also. These handle a variety of formats but will not read microsoft format.
Hello,
I want to make my own books on tape. I already have a good casette deck but it does not have a microphone input. I know I need something like a sound mixer, but I have no idea what to look for. Here's how I want to record the book on tape:
With a quick flip of a switch, I want my voice to either come out of both speakers simultaneously, or out of only one speaker at a time (to simulate dialog). I also want to include music (from CDs) on my books on tape. Can anyone recommend the appropriate electronic hardware to do all of this?
Thank you,
David
I wanted to add a few more points about my question:
* The mixer must be able to accept 2 microphones, my cassette deck, and my receiver or CD player.
* I want to be able to incorporate basic sound effects, such as echo.
check radio shack - they have some simple audio mixers that could do what you want.
better woudl be a local music shop as they would have recording and music equipment and can give you better adice and make sure your money is well spent up front.
there are quite a few low cost audio mixers out the of very good quality that can do th job.
the music shop might also have units for rent or possibly used units for sale
I'm starting to get a bit of a reading bug, but I'm finding it difficult to spend 20-40$ for a book I'll probably only read once.
Someone suggested I try to find an electronic device, similar to a PDA, that's only made for reading books. She said you can downlaod the books online for 5-10$ and store them.
Just like to know where to start looking and what the name of the device actually is.
Eesh. I'm looking for something less expensive. The Kindle and the other options offered by Sony are really, really expensive. Is there something else offered with less bells/whistles that's going to work equally as good for me?
Amazon.com sells the kindle
Sony has also a version of an electronic book as well.

Universities avoid Kindle over accessibility barriers Register
That Act prohibits discrimination against people on the basis of their disability and applies to public bodies and all post-secondary educational institutions whether public or private.
Though maintaining that it had not broken the law, the University settled that case and the trial of the machines will be allowed to conclude this spring.
The American Council of the Blind said that it reached the agreement because of "the university's agreement that should ASU deploy e-book readers in future classes over the next two years, it will strive to use devices that are accessible to the blind", according to a Council statement.
The Department of Justice said that three other universities had agreed not to use or promote Kindle devices or other e-book readers that were not fully accessible to blind users.
"Under the agreements reached today, the universities generally will not purchase, recommend or promote use of the Kindle DX, or any other dedicated electronic book reader, unless the devices are fully accessible to students who are blind and have low vision. The universities agree that if they use dedicated electronic book readers, they will ensure that students with vision disabilities are able to access and acquire the same materials and information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services as sighted students with substantially equivalent ease of use."
